The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has taken a bold step in advancing Nigeria’s clean energy transition by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading players in the renewable energy sector. The goal is to equip Nigerian youths with practical skills that will drive sustainable energy innovation and boost access to electricity in underserved areas.
The REA, under the Federal Ministry of Power, is committed to delivering reliable off-grid electricity to rural and underserved communities. The new partnership will accelerate two Federal Government-backed initiatives — the Sustainable University Challenge and the Renewable Energy Internship Program — designed to provide training, mentorship, and hands-on experience for students and young professionals.
Speaking during the MoU signing in Abuja, REA officials emphasised that the collaboration with Green Energy Mission Africa and other stakeholders will not only address Nigeria’s energy access gap but also create jobs and nurture local expertise.
The initiatives will begin with targeted deployments in universities and rural areas, using technologies such as solar mini-grids and digital energy management tools. By building a pipeline of skilled professionals, the Rural Electrification Agency renewable energy projects aim to contribute to Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while improving livelihoods.
