The Nasarawa electric vehicles initiative is gaining ground as Governor Abdullahi Sule distributed 50 electric cars and 50 electric tricycles to indigent youths in Lafia. This bold move combines youth empowerment, affordable transport, and environmental sustainability in one forward-looking policy.
According to Governor Sule, the Nasarawa electric vehicles project is aimed at helping beneficiaries run small transport businesses, thereby reducing unemployment while offering residents cheaper and cleaner mobility options. Unlike petrol or CNG alternatives, the vehicles run fully on electricity, making them cost-effective and eco-friendly.
To support the scheme, the state has launched its first charging centre at the new state secretariat in Lafia (Nasarawa State Government). Charging centres are also being developed in Akwanga and Keffi, with more to follow across local government areas.
The first batch of electric cars and tricycles will be deployed in Lafia, Akwanga, and Keffi, where they will provide transport for civil servants and students at Federal University Lafia, College of Education Akwanga, and Nasarawa State University Keffi. Each vehicle is air-conditioned and capable of running a full day on one charge.
Governor Sule emphasised that the Nasarawa electric vehicles scheme will not only ease transport costs but also promote sustainability, cut down carbon emissions, and support cleaner urban living. This transition to renewable mobility aligns with Nigeria’s broader green energy and property development vision.
The Emir of Lafia, Justice Muhammad Sidi-Bage (Rtd.), praised the initiative for easing economic hardship and urged beneficiaries to manage the vehicles responsibly. He reaffirmed the support of traditional rulers for government programmes designed to protect livelihoods and strengthen communities.
For the property and infrastructure sector, Nasarawa’s electric transport project signals a shift toward sustainable housing and infrastructure, where green mobility complements urban planning, housing estates, and smart city projects.
