Building Materials Hub: FG Secures 200 Hectares in Lekki

The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured 200 hectares of land in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, to establish a Building Materials Hub that will help reduce the cost of housing nationwide.

This initiative, announced by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to lower construction costs, boost local production, and improve affordable housing delivery. The hub will operate within the Lekki Free Trade Zone ecosystem, which houses the Lekki Deep Sea Port and other critical infrastructure.

According to the minister, the Building Materials Hub will encourage domestic production, reduce imports, and make homes more affordable. “The Building Materials Hub will promote local content, curb rising costs, encourage domestic production, and ensure sustainable housing delivery nationwide,” Dangiwa explained. The government also plans to replicate similar hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with Lagos being the first. For context, see our earlier coverage on Nigeria’s Housing Deficit and how reforms aim to close the gap.

The hub, backed by Lekki Worldwide Investments Ltd, already has an investor secured and is expected to create jobs, stimulate investment, and strengthen Nigeria’s real estate market. During his visit to Alaro City, Dangiwa praised its sustainable building practices, noting that public-private partnerships will remain key in tackling Nigeria’s housing challenges.

He further highlighted that transport infrastructure around Lekki—including seaport, airport, rail, and road networks—will support the Building Materials Hub, ensuring timely delivery of materials nationwide. Industry leaders within the Free Zone also showcased manufacturing plants, power facilities, and housing projects that complement this initiative.

As MD Adeniyi Akinlusi explained, the 16,500-hectare Lekki Free Trade Zone is one of Nigeria’s most strategic investment hubs. By hosting a Building Materials Hub, Lekki is set to reduce foreign exchange dependence, boost local production, and expand affordable housing opportunities.
