A tragic and brutal attack rocked the Zike community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, claiming the lives of at least 40 residents in a late-night ambush.
The horrifying incident, which occurred under the cover of darkness, has been linked to suspected Fulani herders. This attack is part of a disturbing pattern of violence tied to long-standing disputes over land and water resources in the region.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers stormed the community without warning, destroying homes and leaving many injured. The death toll may rise as more bodies are discovered and survivors receive medical attention.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded by ordering an immediate investigation. He also extended his condolences to the affected families, promising justice for the victims.
“No Nigerian should have to live in fear in their own community. We will not tolerate these senseless killings,” said the President.
This incident adds to the rising security concerns in rural parts of Nigeria, especially in the Middle Belt where land-use conflict remains a flashpoint. Stakeholders have called for better military presence, community policing, and urgent policy interventions to prevent further bloodshed.
