Former NNPC Boss Mele Kyari Denies Arrest by EFCC

Mele Kyari, the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has refuted claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested him. The reports circulated widely on social media, but Kyari dismissed them as false and misleading.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kyari clarified that no one had arrested him. He explained that he is currently on a break, which he took after his exit from office. He added that he has barely rested in over 34 years of public service, including six years leading the NNPCL.

Kyari appreciated those who showed concern and assured the public that his record is clean. He said he is open to scrutiny and ready to defend his tenure whenever needed. “As a former public servant, I’m accountable. I have nothing to hide,” he wrote.

While the EFCC has not released an official statement, several reports have suggested that an investigation is underway. These reports link to alleged mismanagement of funds meant for refinery repairs during Kyari’s time in office.

Kyari warned that fake news can damage Nigeria’s image. He said such stories might discourage investors and create confusion among development partners. He urged the media and the public to verify information before sharing it.

So far, the EFCC has neither confirmed nor denied an investigation involving Kyari. The public is advised to wait for official updates and avoid spreading unverified claims.
