Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has criticized the continuous use of estimated billing by electricity providers, revealing that even his official residence receives such unfair charges.
He called for wider deployment of prepaid meters across the state to ensure residents only pay for what they consume. “Even my official residence gets outrageous bills,” he said, expressing frustration over the billing system.
To address these challenges, the Lagos State Government is taking bold steps. The state recently launched solar energy projects to improve access to reliable electricity. These include the installation of over 22,000 solar-powered streetlights, with plans to expand to 32,000 units. The goal is to enhance security at night and reduce dependence on the unreliable national grid.
Additionally, the government has launched a solar mini-grid project in Epe, targeting underserved communities. This system is set to provide steady power to about 12,500 residents.
These efforts align with Lagos’s ambitious target of generating 1 gigawatt of solar energy by 2030. By investing in solar, the government aims to build a more transparent, sustainable, and equitable energy system for all Lagosians.
