The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has witnessed a devastating rise in fatal road crashes, claiming 73 lives and injuring 393 people between January and March 2025. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed these alarming figures, raising fresh concerns over road safety.
Most of the accidents happened due to speeding, brake failure, and loss of vehicle control. These causes, according to FRSC officials, could have been avoided with proper driving discipline and vehicle checks.
One of the most recent tragedies occurred on April 30 near Mowe. A Howo truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into a Mazda bus. Five people died on the spot, while seven others sustained serious injuries.
Earlier in the month, on April 5, another crash involved a Mack truck. The truck lost control near the NIPCO Gas Station, colliding with several vehicles. That accident killed seven people and left four critically injured.
Drivers continue to ignore traffic regulations, especially speed limits, despite repeated warnings from the FRSC. Many accidents happen because vehicles are poorly maintained or overloaded.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest roads. It connects Lagos to several major cities. But it is now increasingly feared for the number of lives it claims. Each crash not only takes lives but also leaves families broken and communities in grief.
The FRSC urges all road users to prioritize safety. They recommend routine vehicle inspections and stricter obedience to traffic rules. With better enforcement and driver education, many of these tragic losses could be prevented.
The rising toll should prompt immediate action from both authorities and road users. No one should have to lose their life on a journey that could have been safe.
