The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State Chapter has renewed calls for an increase in the Lagos NLC minimum wage, urging the state government to approve N150,000 as the new benchmark for workers’ salaries.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Chairperson of NLC Lagos, Mrs. Funmi Sesi, said the current N85,000 wage no longer reflects the harsh realities of living in Lagos. She stressed that workers in Nigeria’s commercial capital face much higher costs for accommodation, transportation, food, and utilities compared to other states.
According to Sesi, the recent minimum wage increases in Imo and Ebonyi States show that better pay is possible and necessary. Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo recently approved a wage increase to N104,000 for civil servants (Punch report), while Ebonyi raised its own to N90,000.
“No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers because we deserve better wages and decent working conditions commensurate with Lagos’ economic realities,” Sesi said.
She emphasized that the labour movement is prepared to engage the Lagos State Government on achieving a fair and improved welfare package for its workforce.
At Property Media Week (PMW), we earlier reported how Imo State approved a new minimum wage and how Ebonyi raised salaries for civil servants. With Lagos now under pressure, the NLC says adopting N150,000 as the Lagos NLC minimum wage would set a national standard, boost productivity, and ease the economic pressure on families.
As inflation continues to climb, workers believe a wage increase is not only fair but essential to survival in Nigeria’s toughest city. For more insights, read our analysis on Nigeria Labour Congress and workers’ welfare.
