The Federal Government has officially launched the N100bn solar electrification Nigeria initiative — a landmark project to power public institutions with clean, renewable energy while cutting the nation’s reliance on costly diesel generators.
The programme, known as the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative (NPSSI), will deploy distributed solar energy systems across schools, hospitals, government offices, and security posts nationwide. It was unveiled in Abuja through a joint agreement between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Budget Office of the Federation, the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria, and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated.
According to REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, the N100bn solar electrification Nigeria project is “a flagship, government-led programme designed to accelerate renewable energy adoption while reducing the public sector’s carbon footprint.”
Phase Zero of the NPSSI will be fully funded by the government, ensuring rapid deployment to critical facilities. Later phases will involve private sector investments, structured without sovereign guarantees — a model designed to attract sustainable financing and innovation.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which aims to increase renewable energy’s share of the national grid and position the country as a leader in Africa’s clean energy revolution. By replacing diesel-powered generators, the project will save billions in fuel costs, reduce emissions, and improve energy reliability in vital public services.
