Nigerians rejoices as FG Bans Meter installation Charges.

The Federal Government has banned electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and installers from collecting payment for meters, warning that officials found extorting customers will be prosecuted. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated that meters procured under the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme will be installed free of charge.

The government has imported 500,000 smart meters, with plans to meter all customers regardless of their band. Adelabu expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of metering and assured that the Tinubu administration is resolving a decades-long problem affecting liquidity in the power sector.

The government will track and monitor installations, and a customer complaint desk will be set up to report any requests for illegal payments. DisCos found extorting customers will face prosecution. The move aims to improve billings, collections, and transparency in the power sector 💡.
