Iran Conflict: FG Clarifies Evacuation Plan for Nigerians, Debunks ‘Stranded’ Rumors

The Nigerian government has addressed concerns about its citizens in Iran. It clarified that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran is still operating and has not abandoned anyone.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, described the circulating reports as false and misleading. Although the embassy building faces security threats, staff are working remotely to support Nigerian citizens in the region.

To ensure their safety, the government has launched a clear evacuation plan. It is currently working with Armenian authorities to transport citizens from Iran to Yerevan, Armenia. From there, they will be flown back to Nigeria.

Highlights of the Government’s Response:

  • Embassy Still Active: Staff continue to support citizens through remote operations due to bombing threats in Tehran.
  • Planned Exit via Armenia: The government is finalizing arrangements to move citizens across the border to Armenia, where flights will take them home.
  • Open Communication Channels: Nigerians in Iran should stay updated through the local app Eitaa, designated community coordinators, and emergency embassy hotlines.
  • Minister Reassures Citizens: “We are committed to protecting every Nigerian abroad,” Tuggar said.

This update follows rising tensions in Iran, which have affected both local residents and foreign nationals. While other countries are also evacuating citizens, Nigeria is taking proactive steps to ensure no one is left behind.

The Ministry encourages Nigerians in Iran to stay calm, follow official channels, and remain in touch with embassy staff. Meanwhile, authorities continue to monitor the situation and adjust plans as needed.
