The UNDP and REA clean energy partnership marks a bold step in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy transition. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently signed an agreement in Abuja aimed at accelerating innovation, skills development, and investment in clean energy projects nationwide.
Key Pillars of the UNDP and REA Clean Energy Partnership
The partnership is anchored on five pillars: energising education and innovation, scaling skills development, supporting state-level policy reforms, unlocking innovative financing, and advancing research and public engagement.
REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, described the deal as a “game-changer” for Nigeria’s clean energy future. He explained that it will boost local manufacturing, expand renewable infrastructure, and attract sustainable investment. Aliyu emphasised that unlocking opportunities in renewable energy requires strategies such as domestic manufacturing, local content development, and innovative financing models.
To complement this, the Federal Ministry of Power has also highlighted the role of off-grid electrification in addressing energy gaps across universities, rural communities, and housing estates nationwide.
