Ibadanland mourns the death of Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on July 5, 1935, his passing came just two days after his 90th birthday—and nearly one year after he ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan.
Before his installation on July 12, 2024, Oba Olakulehin was appointed Balogun under the traditional Ibadan chieftaincy system. Upon coronation, Governor Seyi Makinde formally presented him with his staff of office.
Before reign, Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin led a distinguished life in service. He joined the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers in 1970, retiring as a Major in. Afterwards, he founded FAKOL Nigeria Ltd, Solid Prints, and FAKOL Bakery, contributing to Ibadan’s economic growth. In 1992, he was elected to the House of Representatives for Ibadan South East, and he chaired the House Committee on the Army during Nigeria’s Third Republic.
During his brief reign, Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin emphasized unity, cultural heritage, and peaceful resolution of disputes. His calm leadership strengthened relationships across Ibadan’s diverse lineages. He also promoted collaboration with other Yoruba monarchs, reinforcing stability.
Voices from the Olubadan‑in‑Council and Oyo State’s traditional institutions have started mourning. Many describe him as a humble, unifying leader whose courage, wisdom, and long public service inspired respect across generations.
A formal funeral timetable and succession guidelines based on Ibadan’s rotational succession law will be announced shortly.
