BudgIT, a civic-tech group promoting transparency in Nigeria, has raised serious concerns about the 2025 national budget. The group revealed that the National Assembly added 11,122 projects worth ₦6.9 trillion, most of which were not part of the original proposal from the executive.
These insertions, BudgIT warns, lack transparency and threaten the effectiveness of the entire budget. Many of the projects appear vague and politically motivated, instead of being based on national development goals.
Major Omissions Spark Concern
Aside from the ₦6.9 trillion additions, BudgIT identified several key omissions:
- No allocations were provided for TETFund, UBEC, or the National Judicial Council.
- Over 60 government agencies—including the Nigeria Customs Service and Nigerian Ports Authority—were excluded from the document.
- A large chunk, ₦2.49 trillion, was classified as “personnel costs” for regional commissions without clear breakdowns.
- The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, a major national project, was also excluded. BudgIT fears it may be funded later by cutting essential programs.
Budget Transparency Is at Risk
BudgIT urged lawmakers to review the budget with patriotism and public interest in mind. The group called for open dialogue, expert involvement, and citizen participation to ensure the budget reflects national priorities.
“We cannot afford to play politics with development. Every naira must be accounted for,” BudgIT said.
The organization stressed that failing to correct these issues could undermine economic growth and worsen poverty.
