The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has unveiled plans to provide a 50% discount on the cost of converting petrol vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) — a major step toward reducing fuel costs and advancing clean energy in the country.
Speaking during a recent investigative hearing in Abuja, NNPCL’s Executive Vice President, Gas, Mr. Lekan Ogunleye, confirmed that the company has appointed a focal liaison to drive investor engagement in gas-powered mobility. He noted that vital infrastructure for CNG deployment is already in place, signaling the government’s readiness to scale implementation.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) is gaining traction across Nigeria. According to PCNGi Project Director, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, the number of CNG conversion centres has surged from just 7 to over 300 across 24 states, with more locations in the pipeline. He also revealed that through strategic partnerships, some vehicle owners are receiving free conversions.
Oluwagbemi emphasized transparency and accountability within the initiative. Two staff members were recently dismissed for misconduct, underscoring the programme’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption. He called for increased funding to expand access and confirmed that more Nigerian youths are being trained to support the initiative’s next phase.
Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, echoed the government’s commitment to expanding CNG infrastructure nationwide. Meanwhile, House Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas described the CNG rollout as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy transition agenda.
However, the Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee on CNG Policy Implementation, Hon. Jaha Ahmadu Usman, voiced concern over the programme’s equity, transparency, and accessibility. He warned that without urgent action and stronger oversight, the initiative may struggle to fulfill its promises.
Launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda after the removal of petrol subsidies in 2023, the Presidential CNG Initiative aims to cushion the economic burden on Nigerians, lower transport costs, and promote a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
